L a   M o n t e   Y o u n g   — D r e a m   H o u s e   7 8 '   1 7 " 1973 Shandar One of the incredibly rare Shandar releases which Young and partner Marian Zazeela currently refuse to reissue. JH features on one side, trombonist Garrett List on the other.

T a l k i n g   H e a d s   —   R e m a i n   i n   L i g h t 1980 Sire JH enters the pop world via Brian Eno, producing Talking Heads for a third time. Appears on Houses in Motion and is credited with horn arrangements. Arguably the best 'Heads album, certainly the most inventive.

B r i a n   E n o   —   A m b i e n t   4 :   O n   L a n d 1982 Editions EG One of Eno's best works and one of his most significant for its journeying deeper into ambient territory. JH on one track, Shadow, accompanied by synthetic crickets and other sounds of the night.

D a v i d   S y l v i a n   —   B r i l l i a n t   T r e e s 1984 Virgin Sylvian's post-Japan solo debut, drawing together JH with fellow Stockhausen classmate Holger Czukay. The trumpet playing on the long track Brilliant Trees inaugurates the mournful style that film directors have found so appealing. Some editions include the Words with the Shaman EP as extra tracks. Reissued in an excellent new edition in 2003.

D a v i d   S y l v i a n   w / J o n   H a s s e l l , S t e v e   J a n s e n ,   H o l g e r   C z u k a y   — W o r d s   w i t h   t h e   S h a m a n 1985 Virgin Originally 12" vinyl, later a 3" CD and a cassette-only release with the long Sylvian piece Steel Cathedrals (with Robert Fripp). A great collaboration for all concerned, JH's trumpet taking the place of Sylvian's vocal lines. Reissued in 2003 on the remastered Alchemy — An Index of Possibilities, collecting all the WWTS tracks, Steel Cathedrals and other instrumental pieces by Sylvian.

L l o y d   C o l e   —   M a i n s t r e a m 1987 Polydor The less said about Lloyd Cole, the better. JH on one track, Big Snake.

T h e   K r o n o s   Q u a r t e t   — W h i t e   M a n   S l e e p s 1987 Nonesuch As a consolation for Lloyd Cole horror, The Kronos Quartet finally recorded Hassell's 13-minute string piece Pano de Costa which they commissioned in 1983. Despite the sound being limited to a string quartet, this is still recognisably a JH piece, the more abrasive sections being reminiscent of the frenetic pace and arrangement of City: Works of Fiction. Also includes works by Charles Ives, Ornette Coleman and Béla Bartok.

JH contributes Map of Dusk (with J A Deane), "recorded on the Day of Winter Solstice, 1985, NY." A classic piece. S t i n a   N o r d e n s t a m   — A n d   S h e   C l o s e d   H e r   E y e s 1993 East-West JH's unique trumpet the perfect accompaniment for the Swedish singer's distinctive vocal style.

T e c h n o   A n i m a l   —   R e - E n t r y 1995 Virgin Ex-Godflesh/God members Martin and Broadrick form post-Industrial heavy dub Goliath. JH on two tracks, Flight of the Hermaphrodite and Needle Park. Second of these is closest to familiar JH but darker and more sinister, as befits the overall tone of the album. Not the ideal setting but still a great record.

D a v i d   T o o p   —   P i n k   N o i r 1996 Virgin Dream conjunction of JH with Talvin Singh on the track Slow Loris vs Poison Snail. A shame there isn't more of the two on this album which is less satisfying than other of Toop's always interesting recordings.

S e a l   U n p l u g g e d 1996 MTV While Seal should no doubt be congratulated for inviting JH to guest on this recording, it seems a wasted opportunity. JH is kept in the shadows, rarely lingered on by a camera for more than a few seconds (this is MTV, after all) and his trumpet is way down in the mix. To date, no CD or video available.

k   d   l a n g   —   D r a g 1997 Warner Lang's gesture of defiance to America's anti-smoking zealots (all songs are about smoke/cigarettes/smoking). This seems to be the record that saw JH's shift into more mainstream session work.

H o l l y   C o l e  —  D a r k   D e a r   H e a r t 1997 Blue Note Cocktail jazz ballads. No relation to the dreaded Lloyd...

B a a b a   M a a l   —   N o m a d   S o u l 1998 Palm Pictures Acclaimed poly-cultural album from the African singer. JH on final track, 12-minute Lam Lam, with Howie B and Eno. Point of trivia: JH's Wire essay about Bitches Brew appeared in an issue with Bill Laswell on the cover, accompanied by the headline "Nomad Soul". The same issue also ran an interview with Baaba Maal which maybe explains the origin of this album's title.

M a n d a l a y   —   E m p a t h y 1998 V2 Atmospheric Portishead-style trip-hoppery featuring JH on solo trumpet.

D a v i d   T o o p   —   H o t   P a n t s   I d o l 1999 Barooni Toop collaborates with a different guest on each track, including Bill Laswell, Paul Schütze and Talvin Singh. JH with long-time Toop collaborator Max Eastley on Wing Beats.

B j ö r k   —   A l l   I s   F u l l   O f   L o v e   ( r e m i x ) 1999 One Little Indian The single with the classic Chris Cunningham erotic robots video. In a double CD set of different mixes the second disc included a mix by Guy Sigsworth which features JH on processed trumpet.

R o n u   M a j u m d a r / R y   C o o d e r / J o n   H a s s e l l   — H o l l o w   B a m b o o 2000 Water Lily Acoustics A spin-off from the Fascinoma sessions highlighting Majumdar's bansuri flute playing (the hollow bamboo of the title). Although listed on the cover, JH only features on two tracks, African Queen and A Day for Trade Winds. Another quality cross-cultural Water Lily album, perfectly recorded, as always.

M a n h a t t a n   T r a n s f e r   — S p i r i t   o f   S t .   L o u i s 2001 Atlantic Yes, Manhattan Transfer... Face it, who else in the music world, including Eno, can move from classical to jazz to mainstream pop to DJ-driven funk to experimental weirdness of the Toop variety to the industrial crunch of Techno Animal and play smooth jazz standards like this?

F r o u   F r o u   —   D e t a i l s 2002 MCA Dance-inflected electro-pop with JH also receiving a co-writing credit on two tracks (Flicks and The Dumbing Down of Love) as well as the usual trumpet sessioneering. A later edition of this release includes an extra track, Old Piano, also co-written by JH.

I b r a h i m   F e r r e r   —   B u e n o s   H e r m a n o s 2003 Nonesuch Ry Cooder-produced solo album from the great Buena Vista Social Club singer. Features all the usual recent Cooder regulars plus welcome addition of JH on trumpet.

A l e x k i d   —   M i n t 2003 F Communications Poppy French electronica from Alexis Mauri who doesn't shy away from using acoustic instruments, hence the presence of JH on trumpet for slow atmospheric track Mint. Also features Jean Philippe Rykiel on keyboards, a member of the JH musical circle from Power Spot onwards.
