"The rebirth of virtual cool" states a sticker on the CD case, giving notice that the intention here is to create some modern shapes for jazz, conscious of the past but not wishing to merely replicate it. At first hearing this seems even more a departure from the "typical" Hassell album format than City: Works of Fiction. Closer attention reveals an evolution from City's long compositions with more foregrounded use of sampling, like Aka-Darbari-Java with beats (and even lyrics on a couple of pieces). Occasionally this can veer close to the kind of "several musicians in search of a groove" soup that afflicts some of Bill Laswell's collaborations; mostly, as on Club Zombie everything works together to achieve far more of a successful Hassell/dance synthesis than on the Voiceprint single.

The track Mati is dedicated to painter Mati Klarwein. Blue Night, sounding atypical here, is a live recording from 1989 and far closer in tone to the Surgeon of the Nightsky sound.
