The opening seconds of Percy Jones' looping bass and JH's whispered trumpet tones announce a record like no other. The influence of this album over the years has been enormous and scandalously unacknowledged as its ideas have been so completely subsumed into musical vernacular that they no longer seem to have an identifiable source. Eno does a great job of setting the various pieces in his typically lush atmospheres. The twenty minute Charm is a masterpiece, a development from the longer pieces of Vernal Equinox but with brilliant touches such as the reverse echo on the trumpet. Music from some timeless, eternal sphere. In almost every way a perfect record. Percussionist Aiyb Dieng became a regular part of Bill Laswell's Material team later on. Dieng's solo album, Rhythmagick, has a Mati Klarwein painting, 'Chez Sphinx', as its cover art. • |
