Possible Musics revisted, to some degree, although with more of directly rhythmic aspect. The pieces unwind like the different movements of a ritual dance, attaining a plateau of calm in The Elephant and the Orchid, this album's equivalent to the sublime Charm. The tracks here were recorded in 83/84 and scheduled for release on Nonesuch. When that label turned the album down, the project moved to ECM. Fortunately the rich production is by Eno and Lanois, thus avoiding the often chilly hand of Manfred Eicher that deadens many otherwise fine ECM recordings. Compared to the previous albums, Power Spot can sometimes appear wound too tight, with little space for any extra atmosphere to develop. The conundrum of how to combine a well-produced sound with detailed composition and yet leave space for improvisation found brilliant solution in 1990's City: Works of Fiction.
